Using Your Role Models to Help with Good Judgment

In marriage counseling and life coaching, when you are solving difficult problems or simply going through your day-to-day situations, it is helpful to consider using your role models for advice and guidance.
Whether you are making major life decisions or establishing current goals, the ideas you project onto your role models and incorporate into your happiness can be powerful and sustaining.

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS

When facing perplexing problems my clients often ask, “What would Jesus or Buddha or God or Allah or Martin Luther King or Gandhi or Mother Theresa do?” Many find it useful to ask, “What would Mom or Dad do in this situation? What would they advise me? What would my best friend who has good judgment do? What would my higher self do?”

SPIRITUAL LIFE IS ENHANCED BY FOLLOWING A ROLE MODEL

One reason that the area of spiritual life can be so powerful is that a person can try to follow a role model as a way to foster inner peace, contentment, decency and moral guidance in their day-to-day lives. Important values and principles come through historical, cultural and spiritual teachers.

METHODS OF USING ROLE MODELS FOR MORE AWARENESS

Often you can write your conversation or dialogue with your role model in a journal. I like to move from chair to chair and have the conversation aloud – an adaptation of Fritz Perls’ empty chair technique. You can include one or two role models.

This is a powerful method to become aware of thoughts and feelings toward others and can help you express these. It also is used to become aware of internal conflicts that you can perceive better.

Sometimes grieving people can use this method as a way to look at how the deceased person would have wanted them to live and carry on with the loss. It often helps them to become unstuck with their grief or misery.

Use your role models to help you find more inner peace and happiness.
